Just when I wonder where the next show is going to take me, I find my calendar brimming with singing dates. From singing on the Praise Team at my church, to hosting Opry shows, I have a lot going on in September.
I have the privilege to emcee the KICK START show at the Opry on 9/11. This show is minus the band but not minus the talent. These are our younger singers that are being groomed for the Saturday night shows. It is always inspiring to see how these young people improve with each performance. They will attend a workshop the following morning for some critiquing and helpful hints to improve their stage presence.
Saturday, 9/12 I will be in Piedmont OK for their Founders Day Celebration and Junklahoma! I have not attended either venues but hear that I am in for a real treat! Everyone reading this should plan to take a little drive to Piedmont America to check it out. Rumor has it John Simpson knows how to handle a smoker! And he makes his own Bar-b-que Sauce! Now that is a man I need to get to know!!!
After the afternoon in Piedmont I plan to get together with friends in OKC for our first Football Watch party! Go OU/OSU...! (Both schools will be represented at this fun event). Lots of food and fun with old (and new) friends that night. This party is hosted by Nancy O'Donnell and boy does she know how to throw a football party! There are three patios around her house with fire pits to keep you warm and food for an army! Not to mention great music. She is a wonderful friend!
Sunday 9/13 I will be singing at South Lindsay Baptist Church in their morning worship service. My friend Tyrone Smith is the Minister of Music there...we go back a long ways (100lbs). His wife Vickie taught my sons in elementary school. I look forward to that Sunday service.
The following weekend you will catch me cheering with the other SE Alumni at Friday night's football game against the U.S. Grant Generals on September 18th. They have long been a big rival for us Spartans. It will be fun to see the new Speegle Stadium where I use to cheer!
The next morning 9/19 takes me to Ada, OK at the McSwain Theater for their Annual Awards Show. I am in the Top 5 for "Gospel Singer of the Year". I am very excited about being a part of that Opry, as well as our Rodeo Opry here in OKC. The newly remodeled McSwain is nothing but class. A beautiful venue to visit for sure, and the people are wonderful to work with. It will be a great show.
The following weekend I will be singing for a wedding in Bethany, OK on Friday night September 25th for a very special friend, Mr. B. You may remember his drive-in in Pauls Valley, "Ballards" Drive-in. I have known Mr. B (Johnny Ballard) since I was a teen. We always stopped at Ballards on those trips to Falls Creek as a youth at my church. I continued those stops throughout my adult life any time I was going to Texas. He is 93 years young and marrying a lovely lady Realtor from right here in OKC, Levada Kelly. I look forward to this special occasion. Ain't love grand!
After the wedding I will head to Stillwater, OK to spend the night at my son's house and have a short visit before I head out for Lamar, MO on the 26th for a High School Reunion. Lamar is the High School that my cousin attended and he has hired me to come entertain for their 50th. I can't wait to meet the Lamar Tigers and have a fun weekend helping them reminisce.
To wrap up the month I am thinking of auditioning for "Singers of the Heartland" on the 28th, sponsored by the Sooner Theater. (It's not like I need anything else to do...but I love to share my voice wherever I can, while I still can).
Whew! That's all for the month of September.
